Turkey-Syria Appeal

The Nigerian Red Cross society (NRCS) was established by an Act of Parliament in 1960 as an auxiliary to the Government in Humanitarian Services. The Act empowers the Society to support the Government in response to disasters, emergencies in the implementation of the  Geneva convention and its additional protocols which the Government of the Federation has acceded to. In 1961, following the official recognition by the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent, Nigerian Red Cross Society became 86th member Nation of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies.

Prince Oluyemisi Adetayo Adeaga emerges President of the Nigerian Red Cross

After at least 7 hours of a meticulous screening procedure and then a round of voting, Prince Oluyemisi Adetayo Adeaga has emerged the President of the Nigerian Red Cross Society, Nigeria’s largest Humanitarian Organization. Prince Adeaga was elected alongside other National Officers and Advisers such as his deputy, Barrister Zubair Umar who was elected National Vice President. Prince Adeaga who promised to do his best to uplift the Nigerian Red Cross shortly took his oath of office alongside other National Officers and Advisers of the Nigeria Red Cross who had just been elected too. All the National Officers will serve an initial term of 4 years after which they may seek reelection.

As floods continue to ravage at least 29 States in Nigeria, The Nigerian Red Cross Society has launched a N10.8b Emergency Appeal to enable it deal with the effects of floods in the country. Addressing Journalists, Abubakar Kende, the Secretary General of the Nigerian Red Cross Society  said that “According to the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), an unusually heavy rainfall in 29 of Nigeria’s 36 states has resulted in massive flooding which has displaced more than 1.4 million people and affected over 2.5 million people.  Bayelsa State in Nigeria’s South South region was reportedly the worst affected, with its capital Yenagoa literally cut off and about 700,000 people displaced or affected as at 18 October.”  Kende gave a grave situation report. “As things stand now, the flooding has resulted in over 600 fatalities and more than 2,400 people, injured across the country. Beyond its direct, disastrous effects, the floods have triggered a cholera outbreak in Borno, Adamawa, and Yobe according to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs.” He then spoke of the appeal and the use, the funds would be put to.   “ Most importantly, barely 10 days ago, the NRCS launched an Emergency Appeal in order to raise 13 million Swiss Francs which will be used to support up to 500,000 people and focus on the provision of  Health, Care, Water, Sanitation, Hygiene Promotion, search, rescue. Rapid NEEDS assessments, deploy Emergency First Aid Teams and many more.”
